Or so it seems. His body is found in his office, a locked room, within his locked house, by his wife and his best friend, both of whom have rock solid alibis. I really liked this. When Kaga suspects something is a little bit off with Nonoguchi’s statement, he investigates further, ultimately executing a search warrant on Nonoguchi’s apartment. Novels portal Japan portal.

Because negatives are necessary, I felt like Detective Kaga’s character was somewhat under-developed. He’s one of the most well-known mystery writers in Japan, and when I saw his work compared with Agatha Christie’s, I knew I needed to get in on that. An in depth investigation of motive leads Detective Kaga well into the past and interviews with various different people to uncover the full sequence of events. Otherwise, it’s pretty fantastic, would definitely recommend if you like puzzling mysteries. So the book takes a different approach to most crime novels, where the focus is on the WHO in a murder investigation. Not in the least. Unfortunately, the inauspicious beginning will lead to some readers to abandon the story.

There’s also an element of inside-baseball for writers. It is a chess game between the detective and suspect to uncover the truth.

Malice is one of the bestselling—the most acclaimed—novels in Keigo Higashino’s series featuring police detective Kyoichiro Kaga, one of the most popular creations of the bestselling novelist in Asia. This wasn’t quite as good as The Devotion of Suspect X, at least for me.

It’s just an incredible light sci-fi series that fans of “Dark Matter” would also enjoy.

Nonoguchi and the narration and notes of Det. Osamu Nonoguchi, the author’s friend, finds the body and is enlisted by the police to assist the investigating detective, Kyoichiro Myoichiro.

When the story switched to that of Detective Kaga, the sophistication improved and became more consistent with what I remembered from earlier books. You see the parts, you follow the misleads or you don’t, but it all dovetails nicely in the end and you get your kyolchiro.

Still, it is an ingenious mystery and terrifically structured, and a sseries fast read. And if Kaga isn’t able to uncover and prove why the murder was committed, then the truth may never come out.

One of the core possible explanations for Nonoguchi’s motive for murdering Hidaka – one that receives an inordinate amount of Malice’s page-count — is that Hidaka may have taken several completed novel manuscripts penned by Nonoguchi, and used them as the basis for several of his award-winning, NYT bestselling books.


Hidaka has decided to stay back in the house as kgaa has to submit a serialised story to the editor of a magazine. From early on, the question isn’t, who? Books by Keigo Higashino. The bullys’ simple answer “Because we didn’t like him” was reason enough for them to torture a kid to madness.

With Malice, because of the author’s choice, that choice could easily have led to a DNF, had I not been committed to finishing it based on past, good reading experiences with Higashino’s works. Overall, this book turned seeies to be a pleasant surprise.

From Average to Fantastic – 5 Stars This book is very difficult to categorize. So it’s an enjoyable read for mystery-lovers who don’t need deep, psychological twists, who don’t need blood and gore and a dame who has a knife.

The end product was an ingenious, unthinkable solution to the apparently simple crime of opportunity. Detective Kaga is given the case he and Nonoguchi were colleagues as teachers at a school a few years backand quickly uncovers a number of clues not quite apparent when one looks at the oyoichiro and situation of the case.
